From the very beginning of its existence, baseball was considered to be a game for gentlemen. Only representatives of the upper class had the right to play it. Since this game was for the gentlemen only, it was forbidden to use “cussing”. There was even a special fine, established for the ones who dared to use “cussing” (six cents). Nevertheless, by the end of the 1860s everyone was a baseball fan.
Soon the National League Association was formed by the amateurs. Every baseball team which was considered to be good enough to become a member of the National League Association could be accepted there. Their main aim was organization of games and making sure every baseball team had a place to play.
The first professional baseball team appeared in 1881. The problem was that National League Association didn’t let them join in. For that purpose the Red Stockings decided to make up their own league. It got the name of the American League Association. As the result, the National Association permitted professional teams to play in their league because of a great number of teams which played in the American Association.
Day by day baseball became more and more popular. For that purpose the ALA and the NLA Presidents made up their minds to charge admission to games. Soon, they established gamblers, which were allowed by the NLA, but banned by the ALA, as there was a thought among the players that the baseball game was created for the entertaining purpose only.
Very soon the NLA gambling went out of control. The players became involved in the gambling process. After these events the NLA president decided to ban gambling in 1892, but from that moment the NLA became very unstable.
